DIY Laundry Soap: Save Money and Control Ingredients

Published on 15 July 2024 at 05:38

In the last few articles, I've shared various home remedies to help aid in your family's health. Today, I want to change things up a bit and share something different: how to make your own laundry soap. This not only saves you money but also allows you to control what goes into your laundry soap and, ultimately, what goes onto your skin.

Why Make Your Own Laundry Soap?

Making your own laundry soap has several benefits:
1.  Cost-Effective : Homemade laundry soap is significantly cheaper than store-bought options.
2.  Control Ingredients : You can avoid harsh chemicals and fragrances that may irritate sensitive skin.
3.  Environmentally Friendly : Using natural ingredients reduces the number of harmful chemicals released into the environment.

Cost Comparison: Homemade vs. Store-Bought Laundry Soap

Let's break down the cost savings:

**Store-Bought Laundry Soap**:
- Average cost for a 100-load bottle of liquid laundry detergent: $15
- Cost per load: $0.15

**Homemade Laundry Soap**:
- Ingredients for powdered soap (yields 100 loads):
- 1 box of washing soda (55 oz): $4
- 1 box of borax (76 oz): $5
- 1 bar of soap (e.g., Fels-Naptha): $1 ( I like to use Dr. Bronner's bar soaps this does cost a bit more )
- Total cost: $10
- Cost per load: $0.10

This results in a savings of $0.05 per load. Over a year (doing 300 loads), you save $15 by making your own laundry soap and you know what you are putting on yours and your families skin.
